“To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.” — Joseph Chilton Pearce
I believe one of life's most universal truths is that we are born into a form of slavery. From birth, we are tethered to the family we are born into, a circumstance over which we have no control. This foundational environment largely shapes our upbringing, values, and initial worldview. i.e Aunty Chioma and Brother Bernard's views and conversations can affect our perception of the world. It's a start that we neither choose nor can easily alter in our early years. This initial 'slavery' extends further as we progress through life.
Education is another institution where choice is minimal. We are sent to schools where curricula, norms, and methodologies are predefined, shaping our intellectual growth and societal integration. The education system imposed upon us (by government), is the standards of knowledge and behavior, influencing how we perceive ourselves and further interact with the world. Hence if it is limitied, we are also in this regard limited in our thinking.
Beyond education, societal norms dictate what is considered right or wrong, acceptable or taboo. From etiquette to moral standards, these norms are ingrained in us from a young age, molding our behavior and shaping our identities. We internalize these norms without conscious consent, guided by the expectations of those around us.
Moreover, religion, politics, ethnicity, and various societal systems further constrain our freedom. We are born into religious beliefs and political affiliations, often without choice. Ethnicity assigns us cultural identities and societal roles, while systems like economic structures and legal frameworks define our opportunities and limitations.
In truth, navigating these constraints, we can still exercise control in selecting the aspects of life to which we willingly submit. Even in Galatians 6:4, as reflected in preferred MSG. Our Father encourages us to defy conventions and live creatively as individuals. This biblical passage underscores the importance of asserting personal autonomy within the boundaries we inherit.
Our current "alte" generation, characterized by its embrace of non-conformity and creativity, exemplifies this philosophy. This movement is evident in contemporary fashion and branding, which celebrate individuality and self-expression. However, embracing creativity and autonomy extends beyond personal style choices. It pertains to policymaking, infrastructure development, and everyday decisions that shape our lives.
Consider the practical applications of this mindset in policymaking, where innovative solutions challenge established norms and seek to address societal issues in new ways. Infrastructure design can prioritize sustainability and accessibility, reflecting a creative approach to urban development. Even personal choices, like hair styling with your all-star shoelaces, can be expressions of individuality and resistance to societal norms.
